View on the Danube River
This is one of the largest apartment what we can offer for our guests in Budapest, 7 people can comfortably stay in this apartment without feeling claustrophobic. What is good about this large apartment? It has a beautiful view of the Danube, the bridges, the Gellert Hill and of the Statue of Liberty on the mountain. The apartment is located next to the Erzsébet bridge, in English Elisabeth, what you can see from the balcony.
A lot has been written about the bridges, we will slightly describe the history of the Széchenyi Chain Bridge.
Szechenyi Chain Bridge is the oldest stationary bridge in Budapest, before it, for several centuries, residents used a peculiar seasonal pontoon bridge (made out of 42 large boats, anchored together). The main inspirer and actually the creator of the bridge, Istvan Szechenyi (István Széchenyi 1791-1860) tried to break into Vienna in the winter of 1820 to his dying dad, failed and swore an oath to build a stationary bridge, which actually took almost his whole life. In 1836, he hired a Scottish engineer Adam Clark to develop and implement the project, construction began in ’42, and it ended only after the national uprising of 1848-49. Adam Clark, entering into a rage, dug a tunnel through Gellert Hill in the continuation of the newly built bridge. By that time he had practically become a citizen of Austria-Hungary, got married, had children. The square between the bridge and the tunnel is named after him. The bridge stood for almost a century, it got destroyed by the Nazis before the assault of Budapest by the Soviet army, but it was rebuilt in 1949, on the eve of the centenary of its first discovery. With Count Szechenyi, everything was a little bit more sad, after the revolution, since he was not a nationalist, he left for Austria with a severe mental disorder, where he got better, but nevertheless, after the Austrian government suspected of a coup, he committed suicide. For the famous Hungarians this often happened, as we already know. Count Szechenyi became the main unifier of cities and nations for many years in the hungarian. He owns the phrase: There was no Hungary! Hungary will be! although he was a supporter of the united state of Austria-Hungary.
